adobe illustrator grunge Questions

How to create splatter in text in Adobe Illustrator. Advanced.?

I create a letter, create outlines, then create a grunge splatter stroke and expand it. The Pathfinder Intersect tool does not then work for some reason. It says “The filter produced no results. Please select too overlapping paths.” Anyone know of a good tutorial? Also If I want the Splatter to be continuous through letters how would I intersect without losing the original splatter stroke.

Here’s an example of what I want to do.

I’m not *certain* I know what you want to do, but you can use a clipping mask to do what I *think* you want to do. And if you make a compound path of your letters, you can get what I think you mean by *continuous* splatter through letters.

for the continuous splatter across letters:

object>expand (or outline stroke)
copy the lot.
lock selection.
then paste in place (control V). this will be your clipping mask.
ungroup (this is important as you cannot make a compound path with grouped objects)
object>compound path>make
now put your splatter over the text however you want it to be.
select the compound object and put it to the front.
select the splatter and the compound object together
hit command 7 (or object>clipping mask>make)

and, if you just want the splatter to be shown over one letter, you don’t even need a compound path. just a regular clipping mask – copy and paste the letter and cmd-7 that sh*t! but remember multiple objects cannot act as a clipping mask, you have to turn them into a compound object.
