If you’re looking for a way to add depth to your projects in Adobe Flash, then the Gradient Transform Tool is a great way to achieve this. While solid colors are perfectly fine (in fact you can create stunning work with solid colors alone) the Gradient Transform Tool is an easy way to create some colorful and interesting stuff. And if you’re unsure what a gradient color is, it’s simply the “transformation” between two or more colors.

In order to use the Gradient Transform Tool you will need to create a gradient. This can simply be done by accessing the Color Panel and selecting Gradient as opposed to Solid. Then you can use the Gradient Transform Tool to resize, skew, and rotate the gradient color that is applied to a drawing. This gives you more control over the color of the object.

Gradients can be very useful, so let’s talk about them specifically for a moment. What good are they? Well, one thing gradients could be used for is emulating light sources. This can be achieved simply by applying a radial effect with a bright color in the middle and a dark shade of that color on the outside. You can add more colors in between for more variety. The Gradient Transform Tool can help create the illusion of 3D. If you draw an object that appears to be diminishing into the distance, you could apply a linear gradient in which the dark color is in the “distance” while the color is brighter near the foreground. This usually gives off a convincing effect of perspective. And of course if you love color, you could just splash some gradient colors around and see what sticks.

The Gradient Transform Tool then can be used to help create the effects stated above. To do this, select the tool and you gradient will have a few icons next to it. The middle icon in the gradient allows you to move the entire fill. The top icon on the right of the gradient allows you to mess around with the width. The icon below that allows you to scale the entire fill while the final icon allows you to rotate the gradient. The key is to play around with this until your comfortable with it.

adobe illustrator icons Questions

In Adobe Illustrator, is it possible to replace every instance of a symbol with a different version?

I’m making a large poster in AI which uses pictorial icons as part of a graph, as well as being placed into timelines. I’ve decided I want to change one of the icons – is there anything I can do which will make all those icons change at the same time?
Thanks! :)

If the pictorial icons are really “instances of a symbol”, that is, the icons exist in the Symbols panel, then yes, there are two methods, depending on whether you want to replace all of the instances of the symbol in your whole document, or just some of them.

(The steps for this differ in CS4 than in earlier versions. First I will describe the older method.)

To redefine the symbol, so that ALL instances of that symbol anywhere in the document are changed:

1. Select any instance of the symbol, and click on the Break Link to Symbol button at the bottom of the Symbols panel. This leaves you with ordinary editable art.

2. Edit the art as desired.

3. Select the revised definition and Alt-drag on Windows (or Option-drag on Mac) the new definition on top of that Symbol in the Symbols panel.

Step 1 can be skipped if your new definition is so different from the old one that it is pointless starting from the old art.

In CS4, you can just double-click on any symbol instance, or any symbol in the Symbols panel, and it enters a temporary “symbol isolation mode” for redefining the symbol. This was done to make the steps more discoverable. The old way isn’t hard, but it isn’t “in your face” enough. Many people do not guess that you can alt-drag new art on top of Symbols to redefine them.

To replace one symbol with another, so that you can keep instances of both:

If you already have both symbols defined in your panel (e.g., you already have both black-on-white and white-on-black icons for Campgrounds, and you want to change which one you are using in a map), skip to Step 2.

1. Define a symbol that you want to use for your new icon, by drawing the art and dragging it into the Symbols panel.

2. Select all the symbol instances that you want to redefine. (It is OK if the selection includes other stuff as well. For example, you can select entire layers.) The Select>Same>Symbol Instance command may be useful in this regard.

3. This will, of course, cause the old symbol used in the selection to become selected in the Symbols panel.

4a. In CS4, the Control panel will now contain a popup menu item that says “Replace” with a tiny thumbnail of the symbol used. From that menu, select whatever symbol you want to use instead.

4b. In older versions, Select the symbol that you want to use instead in the Symbols panel, then choose “Replace Symbol” from the panel’s menu.

If your pictorial icons are not symbols at all, but simply ordinary art, then there is no quick method.

How does Inkscape compare to Adobe Illustrator?

I like working with Adobe Illustrator to make icons and such, but now that I’ve used up my trial for CS4 and CS5 I need to either buy it or find an alternative. I’m downloading Inkscape to see how it compares. Obviously it won’t be like for like, but I want to know what other people’s experiences are and if Inkscape is suitable for most things. Ideally I’d like to buy Adobe Illustrator, but can’t justify spending that much for it.

Inkscape is not as powerful as Illustrator, doesn’t have as many “bells and whistles” but it is a quite capable vector drawing program. Of course it’s biggest advantage is that it is free. I would certainly go ahead and use it; it does work different than Illustrator, but for most things I think you will find it a reasonable alternative.
