The protocols behind an XML site map have been adopted by all the major search engines as a quick and easy way for them to tell when your site has been updated and whether or not they need to come back and spider your site. An XML site map contains vital information about your website including when it was last updated how often it gets updated and most importantly all of the pages of your website giving the search engines a birds eye view of how many pages and where they are within your website.
Google and the other search engines require this information to keep up to date with the goings-on of your website and to optimise their process in indexing the World Wide Web.
How do you go about creating a site map?
Site map is a simple .xml page with the following structure:
Your Website URL2009-07-220.5Your Website Page URL2010-01-150.5
As you can see each page of your website will be listed showing the URL, the date modified and the priority. This is all the information that the search engines need to know when to revisit your site and have a look at changes made.
As you can see it’s a simple structure that can be time-consuming if you have a large website of more than a handful of pages to hand code and XML site map with hundreds of pages can take a large chunk of your day but there are programs that will do the entire process for you.
One such program is a Dreamweaver extension which you can either type in the web address of your site and the program will go and spider it in much the same way as a search engine would following the links and creating a site map for you or you can use a Dreamweaver site and select all the pages and put them into a hierarchical type tree view. It is an excellent timesaver which can save you hours on a large site.
Literally within a few minutes use site map is created and submitted to the major search engines.

I’m making a website for the first time and I want to post up my writing samples for my portfolio. I just want to do an image link to my typed pdf documents. How can I insert a pdf into a dreamweaver site and how do i create an image link for this pdf? A step by step answer would be greatly appreciated.
To set up a website, there are three steps you will need to take:

A domain name is a name you want to call your website. For example, yahoo.com, google.com, wikipedia.org… . To obtain a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. Take into consideration that you cannot buy a domain for life. 3- Frontpage Extensions allow you to publish your site directly from the FrontPage application. This means that you will not have to upload files through FTP, or another method. Microsoft FrontPage is a popular WYSIWYG HTML editor and web site administration tool from Microsoft.

i got this book about frontpage 2003 and i just started reading it but i have a few questions for anyone familiar with this.
-Should i read about frontpage first before learning HTML codes or learn the codes first?
-Which is better for beginners -Frontpage/Dreamweaver?
-Where do you buy them?
-If its frontpage, how much is it and is 2003 the latest version?

You’re using language i dont understand. lol I just want to learn to create my own site..i dont understand all that lingo. Can someone explain it to me like you were telling all this to a 5 yr old. 
Frontpage and Dreamweaver are merely tools that are supposed to help you generate web pages/sites. They don’t have to follow all the standards, but they come pretty close.
They also typically generate web pages that are overly bloated. Meaning that the HTML (and/or CSS) that is generated has extra information that can be more simplified and therefore display the web page faster.
That’s where knowledge of HTML and CSS (cascading style sheets) comes in.
For example, I’ve seen both products generate code like this:

When it could have looked like this and
This is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country!
Remember the above HTML only shows an example of one line, not an entire document which can be MUCH, MUCH larger.
