Money Saving Tips to Photography
1. Make your own soft-focus filter
Soft-focus filters can be used to create old-fashioned, romantic portraits, dreamy landscapes and so forth.
Make your own by smearing a small amount of Vaseline onto an old skylight filter. Use a tiny blob to begin with and increase the amount to increase the softness. Leaving a clear spot in the centre will produce a blurred vignette effect while the centre of the image stays sharp.
Alternatively, for a variety of soft-focus effects experiment with cling film, sweet wrappers and, of course the classic black stocking – as used by celebrity portrait photographers.
2. Use free software
The latest editing software offers amazing features but it’s surprising what you can do with the many free applications that you can download on the web.

3. Make your own reflector
Tape some foil to a piece of card, and your home studio has an instant reflector.
If it’s too harsh, scrunching the foil and flattening it back will soften the reflected light.
Alternatively, white card or a white table cloth or bed sheet makes a good soft reflector, and black card or fabric can be used to cast shadows back to the subject.
4. Make your own flash diffuser
Make your own flash diffuser with nothing more than a light tissue over the flash head.
Or tilt the bounce head upwards and tape a piece of white card behind it (like a scoop) to create a bounce diffuser.
If you’re a milk drinker those translucent plastic cartons can be adapted to make a great softbox.
Cut a small aperture in the top just big enough to insert the head into.
Point the head directly forward or tilt it up (though you may want to put some foil or white card on the back to stop light spilling out the back.

photoshop vignette Questions
How do I do a circular vignette on photoshop?
A while ago, I asked how to do a vignette. Every answer I got showe me how to get a square one, but want a circular one. I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, but I’m not very good a editing photos. Thanks!!
Step 1: use default colors (press d)
Step 2: switch to gradient tool (might be hidden under paint bucket tool)
Step 3: across the top there is a tool bar, click the “foreground to transparent” option from the drop down.
Step 4: right next to that is the “radial gradient” option (2nd icon); choose it. This is what makes it circular.
Step 5: Further along are some options… put a check mark in “reverse” and “transparent”, (you can leave dithering on or off, doesn’t really matter, but I like it off).
Step 6: create a new layer on top of the original image layer.
Make sure your new layer is highlighted. Next.. click somewhere in the center of your image and drag it outward to edges and release. The further out you drag it, the more transparent area will show. Now you can mess with the opacity, or blend modes if you like to further perfect the look you want.
P.S. You don’t “have” to use black for vignette either. You can use any color. Makes for some interesting looks, but black is the “norm”.
I’m not sure what version you’re using. I’m using CS4 but they should be similar to what I wrote. I hope.
How can I get LOMO effects with a dSLR?
I’ve recently become interested in LOMO photography, and was wondering if there was any way to get the LOMO effect on digital photographs.
I have Photoshop and want to create the effects of vignetting and specifically light leaks, like the Holga camera produces.
Is there any way to easily add these effects to my photographs instead of buying the LOMO cameras themselves?
I also hear that buying the actual cameras are not worth it due to quality issues with the hardware. Is this true? They are rare and expensive where I live so I wouldn’t want to waste the money.
You are wanting to introduce design flaws into a product that was made to higher specs. But you can do something about the vignetting and the look of a cheap lens. Stack a bunch of filters on your lens, and don’t clean the dirt off of them. Maybe even add a little. Put fingerprints on them to reduce clarity.
Sorry, but I can’t help you with the light leaks without ruining your camera.
